Depends: There are many type of skin conditions which can cause pruritis or itching of the skin, including atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis. Depending on the cause of the skin condition, improper scratching the skin, may cause secondary infection. Consult your physician to determine the cause of the skin condition is the first step.

It could be: an allergic reaction to something that you got in touch with or an insect bite. Use an over-the-counter topical anti itch cream such as benadryl (diphenhydramine) or hydrocortisone.
