For a short time: Iontophoresis patches are used for acute soft tissue injuries to help focus the administration of medication right to where it is needed in the body. The medicine does not linger in these areas for a long time. Not more than if the medication was taken by mouth. The side effects that have been noted after the patch is removed are mostly related to possible skin irritation.
