Interesting question: When we were in training we used to have breath holding contests where we would attach ourselves to an O2 sat monitor and see how low we could go. Almost no one could get lower than an oxygen saturation of 95%. We had one guy who was a skin diver. A couple of times he made it to 91% before taking a breath. These are not hypoxic levels. Your body will not let you become hypoxic.

Hypoxia.: You cannot cause hypoxic brain injury by holding your breath in your alert, awake state. It does not matter if you are lifting weights. When you lift weights, you should exhale with each lift, and inhale with recovery. You should do the lifting movements slowly and with control for maximum benefit.
