Possible: Just because it may not be meningitis does not mean don't get care. Meningitis is characterized y neck rigidity, sudden high fever and altered mental status. All 3 are present only about half the time.Sometimes photophobia,or intolerance of noise. But you have severe headache and neck pain(you may be calling neck rigidity "pain"). Please get medical help ASAP. Hope you get better soon.

Meningitis: can be from many different causes. Chemical meningitis, bacterial, viral, fungal.... The rule of thumb that I was taught as a medical student in NYC is that if you are thinking this might be meningitis you should go ahead and do a work up for it. If the person has a fever, stiff neck and looks sick you should have a look at the spinal fluid right away.
