Hormones: Most common reason for irregular spotting is changes in hormones. Also changes in weight (thin/heavy) or thyroid or pituitary. At 18 years of age, the communication between your pituitary and your ovaries and your uterus via hormones is still maturing, so some irregularity can be common. If spotting bothers you, consider birth control pills which typically make period lighter and shorter
