Period: Brown discharge is blood that has lost it's oxygen. It is the start of your period. Most likely.

Spotting ok: Light brown discharge can be from a small amount of blood staying in the vagina for a little while before coming out of the vagina. It is not unusual to have spotting a day or 2 before your period starts. If your regular period does not come, consider checking a home pregnancy test.
