A 31-year-old female asked:
when will a blood test show positive? we've been trying for 4 months to get pregnant. i took a test on friday at the doctors office. it was negative.

Missed Period: It will show positive when you are pregnant and enough days have passed after the baby is conceived for it to be big enough to have a placenta, chemicals and blood that your body can detect. Usually you test AFTER a period is missed, not before.

How soon can a blood test show you are pregnant ?

Dr. Steven Bowers answered

Varies: Within several days of conception, certainly within 2 weeks your body begins to produce enough of the hormone we test for to know that you have conceived. At that point other tests as well as passage of time are needed to confirm whether the pregnancy is normal and viable.

A 24-year-old female asked:
What is the hook effect in regards to pregnancy testing and why does it occur? Would it effect a blood test?
2 doctor answers • 3 doctors weighed in

Dr. Cornelia Franz answered
Specializes in Pediatrics
Yes: A very rare cause of false negative results occurs when very, very, high concentrations of HCG are present. This is called the high-dose hook effect. Urine and blood can be negative. Diluting the urine and/or getting an ultrasound can confirm pregnancy.

A 26-year-old female asked:
What if u do a blood test and its negative but u feelin pregnant?

Dr. Jon Ahrendsen answered

Wait and repeat it: Best advice is to wait 1-4 weeks and then repeat it. If it is still negative you might consider seeing a doctor. There are different kinds of pregancy tests, and doctors can do qualitative tests that give a 'level' of the pregnancy hormone and not just a positive or negative result. Many women do skip periods at times. Some women have early miscarriages before they really know their pregnant.
