Chickenpox: Interestingly shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus - aka the chickenpox virus. If you get shingles it means that you had chickenpox when you were younger and that it has just "reappeared". To feel better it depends how far along your course of shingles is. If the skin infection has resolved then antiviral therapy provides limited benefit, and then the focus should be on pain control
