A member asked:

Is it normal for vaginal discharge to have a little bit of white flakes (not really white like milk just a little bit white but darker shade) smelly?

No: Normal vaginal discharge should never be smelly. A normal discharge can have some white spots in it. A vaginal discharge that has a bad odor sometimes needs to be treated with antibiotics. Your Gyn can do an exam to find out what it is. Best wishes!

No itching/odor, yes: If there is no vaginal itching or odor, yes it is normal.

Other symptoms?: Vaginal discharge changes character throughout your cycle, but the whitish flakes and odor suggest a mild vaginal infection. If there is itching/swelling you may have a yeast infection, and can treat with OTC Monistat. If not, this could be a different infection that may need antibiotic treatment. Try the monistat, and if no improvement, see your doctor. If fever, pain, etc, get an appointment!

It can be ..: What matters if this is a change of discharge from what you normally experience and/or if you have associated symptoms like itching, pain, blood in the discharge or a high risk exposure for a sexually transmitted disease. If that's the case I would encourage you to seek in the input of your primary care physician to evaluate for a concerning infectious cause. Best of luck.
