Wait: Starting birth control after your period starts makes more sense. You won't get any protection any earlier if you start now and you won't delay your period at this point but will be more likely to have irregular bleeding with your first package.

Birth control pills: Follow the directions on the package. You can usually start the pills on the Sunday before your period begins or on the same day your period begins. If you start today, you might not have a period, or may have a little spotting. Everyone reacts differently to the pills and it might take 2-3 months for your body to get used to them. Use another form of birth control for the first month on OCPs.
