Titrate metformin: Hi. Those are common metformin side effects if started off at high dose and not titrated up. I suggest you drop the metformin to 500 mg/day for one week, then go to 1000 mg/day for the next week, than for the 3rd week and thereafter, take 1500 mg/day. That usually works to avoid these common metformin GI side effects.

If you started 1500: Of metformin all at the same time, it can have horrible GI consequences. I would recommend starting with 500mg with breakfast. Do ONLY that until you are not having diarrhea anymore, then increase to 500 in AM & PM with dinner. If you finally make it up to 1500, but still feel pretty loose, you can try Welchol (colesevelam). It also helps with triglycerides, cholesterol, and HGBA1C.
