Zyrtec (cetirizine) : Will not stop viral cold symptoms including sneezing

Can be/not should be: Normal healthy children under the age of two can get upwards of 6 colds a year, especially during cold/flu season or if they are in daycare or nursery school. Colds and allergies have similar symptoms but totally different causes. Zyrtec (cetirizine) controls allergy symptoms but has no effect on the various viruses that can cause the common cold.

Still can get colds: Zyrtec is not approved for use in babies. It is an antihistamine used for allergies. Since a cold virus causes sneezing in a different way, the zyrtec won't help cold symptoms. Nasal saline spray and clearing the nose with a bulb syringe while difficult in toddlers can be helpful. Bath and showers can also help.
