Lots of things: Febrile illnesses mostly come from infections, caught from others. They can be viral (like head colds, bronchitis, intestinal infections with vomiting and diarrhea) or they can be bacterial, such as strep throat, ear infections, strep pneumonia, diverticulitis in the bowel, skin infections or any number of others. Rarely fungal infections or unusual medication reactions lead to fever.
