Hormone effects/age: It could be a variety of reasons. As you get older there are physiologic changes, likely related to menopause. With lower or no estrogen in your system, your vaginal tissues including the tissue around the urethra will be less elastic and thinner. This could lead to incontinence as the muscles around the urethra do not squeeze as well. Surgery can restore urethra by a gynecologist and help

Here are some ...: What you described is naturally / realistically expected due to the combined effects of non-/dis-use of urethra and long-term chronic irritation / inflammation of urethral mucosa and peri-urethral tissues facilitated by catheter and local bacterial overgrowth. There have been no known measures that can prevent such consequence of long-term indwelling catheter but applying due diligent cath-care.
