2 facets same diagno: Both terms are descriptions of epilepsy. Generalized Absence seizures, Petit mal, are one type of seizure. Photosensitive epilepsy means your seizures may be triggered by flashing or strobe lights. The diagnosis is still epilepsy, and the treatment consists of finding the best AntiEpileptic medication for you. Good luck!

You're out of date: Look at http://www.epilepsysociety.org.uk. "Petit mal" is an obsolete term. It hasn't been part of seizure terminology for more than 30 years. Don't use it. If you want to understand your epilepsy type clearly, hanging on to "petit mal" will only hold you back. Ask your neurologist to give you the EXACT TERMINOLOGY of your type of epilepsy in the overall classification of epilepsy and learn it.
