Hormonal: Lumps under the nipple in newborns are almost always normal. They occur because the mom's pregnancy hormones cross through the placenta to the fetus, and those hormones cause baby acne and nipple swelling in male and female babies in the first two months of life. They can also cause a vaginal discharge in newborn girls. If the lump is red and hot, then have baby's doctor check it.

Leave it alone: Both genders can have nipple enlargement after birth from residual maternal hormones that were not extracted prior to cord clamping. The worst thing you can do is mess with it & create an opening for germs to get in and infect the nipple. It will disappear over time, usually by 3 mo if not sooner. If it ever becomes inflamed around the site see your doc.
