Try neuropathics: These medications are not the best neuropathic or nerve pain medications. They help muscle relaxation in the case of metaxalone and general pain in the case of the Dilaudid. Consider seeing a pain specialist for possible gabapentin or lyrica (pregabalin) or a tricyclic which help sciatica better. Your doctor may also consider an injection if a MRI is corroborative and PT with core strengthening does not help.

Let your Dr know: Sometimes steroids or NSAID medication can help decrease swelling and inflammation at point of nerve /root compression. Ibuprofen 400-800 mg every 8 hours with food can be tried at first. Traction or surgery may be indicated if the problem is in the spinal area. I'n most localities the therapist cannot do traction without an additional order from the physician.
