A member asked:

I got bad stress reactions in my shins 4 months ago, i'm in rehab. i'm supposed to ice 20 min twice a day, is it bad to ice for longer than 20 min?

Ice 15-20 minutes.: Watch the clock as you ice or use a timer. When treating stress reactions in the shins, you will want to ice the first 48 hours for 15-20 minutes twice daily, but no longer. Icing longer than 20 min. can cause further damage to underlying tissues. If you think shin splints are bad, you do not want to experience the discomfort from frostbite or other cold thermal injury, particularly over a nerve.
