Not clear: This is only speculative but apparently a central African reservoir of the virus was exposed perhaps by hunters in the field or the curious poking around who then got infected, not knowing what it was and then starting the epidemic.

2014 Ebola Outbreak: During the 2014 outbreak Ebola has been found in the West African Countries of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal. The first 3 countries being the hardest hit. These countries are poor and do not have the advanced medical structure in place that can be found in the US. Significant efforts are being made to identify, monitor & contain cases.
