Absorption: Actually, a very light (non-fatty) meal (under 300 calories) is ok if necessary, but the reason for an empty stomach is similar to the reason not to crush pills. Extended release includes a larger amount of active ingredients that are designed for slow absorption. Food makes it enter the bloodstream too quickly and increase risk of bad side effects. You do not want that, so follow directions. OK?
