It Depends: If the symptoms started today you can wait a day to see how it progresses. If it has been going on for more than a couple of days he should be checked by your doctor for a treatable condition or to give you guidance for supporting him through it.

Viral syndrome: The summer is full of viruses. Coxsackie pharyngitis being one of them. I think it is ok to give him a fever reducer, a lot of fluids and wait out the fever for 48-72 hours unless the symptoms increase.
