Ear ache: If you were diagnosed with middle ear infection, then decongestant and oral antibiotic are standard first line treatment. If you were diagnosed with outer ear or "swimmer's ear" infection, then a an astringent to dry the ear and antibiotic drops are the best initial options. Why were you placed on oral and topical antibiotics? At this point, you need to follow your doctor's recommendations.

No: A new earache, persisting longer than a few hours or associated with any fever or discharge from the ear should be seen by your health care provider. If you have a minor sore throat with some associated ear discomfort it is generally due to a virus and does not respond to or require antibiotic treatment.
