Polycythemia vera: Polycythemia can only be fatal if left untreated and unmonitored. Phlebotomy, low dose aspirin and eventually chemotherapy if needed can be used.

Quality of life: Polycythemia is not acutely life threatening though it can have an impact on one's quality of life. Talk with your doctors about supportive care issues like adequate fluid intake, anti-inflammatory foods and supplements (omega 3s) and the need for medication to decrease the risk of clotting.
