A member asked:

My bone scan says there is photopenic defect within my ribs what does this mean?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Decreased uptake: This means there's a spot with less uptake of the radioactive marker, which usually means less blood flow. Usually bone scans are used to look for areas of increased uptake or blood flow, as would be seen with a tumor or infection. Decreased uptake is usually not of concern, but your doctor can order other imaging studies of the area if needed. Talk to your doctor.
