Cough, throat pain: It depends on length and severity of symptoms. A new cough and sore throat may just be from a viral infection. If there is no fever or worsening, it's okay to watch for 2 weeks. Drinking plenty of fluid and taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen for aches can help. If fever or worsening chest pain is present, or if cough lasts longer than 3 weeks, a doctor needs to check.
