Mid cylce: Ovulation occurs about 14 days prior to the NEXT menstrual period. I recommend couples have intercourse every other day starting about day 10 after the start of the last menstrual period for about a week to 10 days to blanket the ovulatory period. Sperm counts are maximium after 3 days of abstinence but sperm only lives in a woman's body about 48 hours.

Preg/ovulation: Sperm can live 24-48 hours, and male sperm ( y chromosome) swim faster than female (x chromosome), so intercourse can precede ovulation or post date ovulation (eggs live for 48 hours) and pregnancy can occur. Intercourse after ovulation ( and not before in a given cycle) favors male infants. Intercourse prior to ovulation favors female infants (male sperm do not live as long).
