More sustained: Bipolar disorder consists of swings in mood that last at least two weeks for depression or 1 week for mania, or 1 week for mixed mania and depression. All of these need to be severe enough to seriously impair work of social function. There has to be at least one manic episode in the past (or present) to diagnose bipolar disorder, type 1, but bipolar type 2 is if there are only past hypomanic ones.
