1 day: The egg can only be fertilized for about 1 day after ovulation, but sperm can live for 4-5 days--so sex 4-5 days prior to ovulation can result in pregnancy.

14dys prior to cycle: A great way to measure ovulation is by tracking it on the calendar. A woman will ovulate 14 days before her cycle. If you have a 28 day cycle then it will be 14 days before your cycle or 14 days after your cycle. However cycles are from 21 to 30 days long. Also your body temperature changes around your cycle. Download an app called pinkpad or mydays to track your cycle & ovulation.

Not always: You still need to have a normal uterine cavity, and open fallopian tubes. At 18, you should have no problem unless you were born with a uterine birth defect.

One moment in time: Ovulation is a single moment in time, when her egg pops out of her follicle on the surface of her ovary. Think of it as 1 minute, and then she has already ovulated and the egg is free. Before that 1 minute, she is trying to ovulate, or in the process of ovulation. The real question is when does a woman ovulate, which is usually about 14 days before the start of the next menstrual period.
