Infected?: Sounds like it might have gotten irritated and then a skin infection. Suggest wash it with hydrogen peroxide to clear off dead skin. Then put topical antibiotic ointment on it a couple of times a day and see if quiets down in 2-3 days. If not, see your Dr or Urgent Care for check.
