Fever: serves a purpose - it helps us fight infection. We treat fever not because it is dangerous, but because it makes us feel unwell. Generally, the body will not allow its temperature to rise to a dangerous level. I generally tell parents they can treat fever, but they should not worry that the temperature will do damage unless they are seeing readings above 104. If it is above 104, see the doc!

Probably not: Fever itself is rarely harmful. It is actually helpful. How the child is acting is a more important indicator of how she is doing.

It depends: It depends what the other symptoms and conditions are that are causing the fever. It is the underlying cause of the fever that should be addressed. Fever can be a response to infection and this level of temperature elevation typically is not associated with organ damage. Most uncomplicated viral illnesses will resolve within 10 days.
