A member asked:

I have heard people break their hand or wrist when drunk but don't feel it until sober, why?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

150 years ago: alcohol was used as an anesthetic for surgeries, before we had chloroform and ether. Alcohol in high doses, when you make someone very drunk, has analgesic and anesthetic effects. However, it is very toxic and is no longer used for that purpose, since we have many safer and more effective agents for both those purposes.
