Lipids: Hi. No, fats and cholesterol are chemically different. Fats (proper name "triglycerides") and cholesterol are both "lipids". Lipids are molecules that are not soluble in water. Fats can be burned as fuel for energy or used to make membrane lipids, etc. Cholesterol can't be burned as a fuel, but is used in making cell membranes, steroid hormones, and bile acids. Interesting stuff!
