Meconium aspiration: Infants born post term or under conditions of stress will sometimes evacuate their bowels prior to delivery. This substance is called meconium, and if inhaled by the infant during the delivery process, can lead to severe respiratory distress. If meconium is suspected in the amniotic fluid at delivery, a team of specialists are usually called in preparation to treat the baby promptly.
