Opiates not answer: to most people with back pain. There are MANY things to do, first and foremost is finding the cause of the pain, and treating it directly if possible. If there is a bulging disk impinging on nerves, that can be treated both surgically and non-surgically. Nerve/plexus blocks, muscle relaxants, anticonvulsants and other medications also help, as well as heat, exercise, braces. You need a program.

Many Possibilities: Depending on how long it's been going on, i would consider an evaluation by a spine specialist. Sometimes it could be a muscle imbalance, early onset arthritis or scoliosis. Also could be a pinched nerve/herniated disc. Either way it might be good to figure it out and get appropriate treatment. Regarding Pain medications, I would avoid them and be honest with the doctor about your past.
