Possibly: HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, can be passed from the mother to the unborn child. If the mother's HIV infection is recognized before the baby is born, doctors will try to treat the mother to avoid tramission of the virus to the baby. There are also precautions that are taken at delivery and the mother is asked to feed the baby with formula rather than breast feeding.
