See you doc: Chest pain that hurts when you breath is also called pleuritic chest pain. This is usually from the muscles or bones of your chest wall, or inflammation inside your chest. This may be a simple viral inflammation (pleurisy or costochondritis), or something more serious like pneumonia or a blood clot. An exam, and possibly some testing may be necessary.
