Probably normal: Could be a normal occurrence. You are "hearing" the beating of your heart. If it persists you might want to touch base with your doctor.

Probably not: You have become aware of the pulsation of the carotid artery which is anatomically next to the inner ear. The safest thing is to make sure, in a rare case, you do not have a vascular abnormality of the carotid artery.
