Old versus new: That is an old way of prescribing for herpes. Herpes treatment in the modern world is for three to five days only. Second, having sores or outbreaks and being on meds or not on meds has NO correlation to when you are contagious. Herpes contagiousness is through viral shedding and is not in any way increased or decreased by having a sore or not having a sore. The medication does not prevent infect.
