A member asked:

Do you always get prominent eyes with thyroid disease?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: Most thyroid disease is due to excessive secretion of thyroid stimulating hormone by the brain. This does not affect the eyes. A small number of cases also secrete a product which stimulates the production of material deposited behind the eye cause protrusion of the eye (s). This is termed exophthalmos. When the two occur together it is graves disease - about 10% of the total.
