Probably viral: Although the most common cause of a one week purulent pharyngitis is viral, you should have a throat culture to identify if there is a pathogenic bacteria and what it is sensitive to. Then specific treatment can be given. Salt water gargles in the mean time may be helpful. Diagnosis is mandatory.

See a doctor: You need to see a doctor. If you're still symptomatic after a week you need to be examined and possibly tested for strep throat. If it's strep & you wait any longer, you're increasing the chances of streptococcal complications which include rheumatic heart disease. It may be as simple as a Rx for penicillin to treat your illness, but w/o being seen by a Dr. there's no way to know.
