I went to planned parenthood for a possible uti. they said no uti but possible gonorrhea or chlamydia and was given azythromycin as precaution?

Reasonable diagnosis: If you went to Planned Parenthood because of a UTI, then you had some symptoms like burning on urination or a sense of retention. These symptoms can sometimes be felt when you have a sexually transmitted infection such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. Treating for both, especially in the setting of unprotected sex, is quite appropriate.

Gonorrhea/chlamydia: The gonorrhea/chlamydia test has a 24-48hr turn around time. Often, if we have a strong suspicion of one or the other, we will go ahead and treat rather than waiting for the test results. Azithromycin treats chlamydia.

UTI versus STD: Gonorrhea and Chlamydia can mimic symptoms of a UTI. It is common practice to give antibiotics as a precaution when men or women have symptoms that can be attributed to an STD, especially in the setting of the ER or facility like planned parenthood, when other causes for the symptoms are negative (like a urinalysis).
