I injured my back and my doctor prescribed clinoril, (sulindac) but what does this drug do?

Non-steroidal drug.: Very effective for pain, albeit slightly slower in acting effectively. That is because sulindac (clinoril) is a pro-drug. It must be metabolized by the liver to turn into the superior pain reliever it is. It is in the same class as 500mg of Naproxen taken daily. It too is a twice daily drug.
