Why tyramine is contraindicated with mao inhibitor?

Increase BP: Tyramine in large doses can raise your blood pressure, that can cause a stroke and death. Small doses don't do that because there is enough MAO in your intestinal tract to metabolize the tyramine. When you take a MAO inhibitor, tyramine is no longer metabolized in the gut, so it is free to raise your blood pressure to a very high level. This is less likely to happen with topical MAO called emsam.
