Many options: There are treatments available. Topical and oral medications can be used but must be used as prescribed to have any success. Laser treatment is also available and can be effective. That being said, the older we are the more difficult it is to get rid of it. One must be very patient regardless of the treatment. Curing nail fungus is a slow process that takes months to even over a year.

MAKE SURE: At 8 y/o, make sure it's fungus by testing some nail clippings. Then, if a fungus, talk to your pediatrician about using a pediatric dose of Lamisil (terbinafine) pills. Some doctors and parents prefer using topicals, but the success rate is lower.

Fungus in nail: Fungal nail infections can be confirmed by sending nail clippings to laboratory for testing. Nail infection can be treated with ant fungal nail paints or by anti fungal tablets. Anti fungal tablets can affect liver , requires regular blood test during treatment to monitor liver functions. It is very hard to get rid of fungus from nails & needs long treatment .
