Complicated: The answer is complicated. In general glucocorticoids suppress the immune system by interfering with protein production in cells. That being said, glucocorticoids also work on receptors in the cytoplasm of cells, enacting signal mechanisms, some of which are unclear as to action. Glucocorticoids also release food stores for use in a stress reaction.
