Probably sprained : When we lay down, some of the water from our chest and abdomen redistributes to our hands and feet, making them swell. If there is any inflammation (due to trauma or over use) those extremities and digits will swell more during sleep. Although cracking your knuckles isn't necessarily bad, you can injure your joints and ligaments if you crack them aggressively, similar to a sprain or jammed finger.
