Sprain: If there is ongoing pain and swelling after treatment consisting of restricted activity, strapping, elevation while sitting, cold or warm application for a week or two, taking nsaids like ibuprofen for a few days.then chronic damage is suspected and an orthopedic surgeon should be consulted for evaluation and treatment. Torn ligaments would be a possibility in that case.

LESS PAIN/STABILITY: If a sprained ankle is healing properly, the pain and swelling should be decreasing daily. Also, people frequently say "it feels like my ankle is giving out." This is the feeling, a sense if you will, of instability. If you don't have these, it's probably coming along fine. Regards, Dr. Latva
