Symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) also contains a long-acting bronchodilator that provides immediate relief of asthma symptoms. Cromolyn does not do this. Symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) is much more effective. Cromolyn is a bit safer. The difference is moot. Cromolyn (intal) is no longer available on the american market.
