Meniscus tear: If locking, or giving mechanical problems: YES. If not: NO. Check with your orthopedic surgeon.

MRI knee: sounds suspicious for a type III signal which usually indicates a tear of the meniscus. That said, even if there is a 'tear' surgery is not necessarily needed. check with your local orthopedist.
