Well...: As part of the guidelines for treatment of people with diabetes, an ACE inhibitor (such as Enalapril) is recommended. If his kidney function is not too compromised he must take it. Talk to the Dr. there are alternatives, and all the others do pretty much the same. It is safe and necessary drug

It can cause kidney problems, so patients should be periodically monitored for that. It can also lead to a dry persistent cough, but that generally goes away once the drug is stopped. Overall, a safe and very effective drug in diabetics and those with heart disease.
